Re: Graffiti

mashed there was a decent piece on Vice the other day about this very subject:

http://www.vice.com/read/banksy-graffiti-allowed-clacton-293

Basically, its vandalism until the right people decide they like it and councils realise they can make money off it.

Banksys a bit of a fraud and not as clever as he thinks he is in my opinion - but then again thats about a 1000% more desirable than most of the shit, lazy tagging that goes on.

Then you see some big pieces like you used to get on the trains in the US and they are stunning.

Not a fan of Banksys art but i like the message sometimes.

I know bugger all about him to be honest apart from what I get on the web (Exeter).

Re: Graffiti
pickle, I like some of his work, think some of it is really clever, but won't detract that over the years he has plagiarised far more than he should have IMHO, given his own set of skills.

thought that before his name had even reached the local Bristol paper years ago.

do also think it's highly hypocritical of the council spending tens of thousands of pounds to get rid of his stuff, and then doing a complete u-turn and encouraging him, whilst things of equal merit in the same city by other artists is still wiped out, because it's not by him.

Banksy is one of the most highly respected 21st century artists.

Meanwhile, you clearly got your crayons taken away because you thought they were food and haven't quite got over it ever since.

It's graffiti for people who don't like graffiti.

Same as Pendulum was DnB for people who didn't like DnB.

exactly. the whole point of graf is its subversive and i dont understand how its socially acceptable to like one type and not the other. I do understand actually its cos most people are sheep who are told what to think

Re: Graffiti
mashed, wasn't that many years ago, that the local council in Bristol used to moan like hell about how many tens of thousands it would cost to remove his work - they got rid of a lot of his stuff.

could never work out why exactly it would cost the figures they quoted either.

Now they might as well be practically begging him to do another and another.

funny old game....

Re: Graffiti
It's not Banksy himself that I'm not really a fan of, it's just the fact that it's perfectly OK, even encouraged and commended for him to do things that if it was literally anyone else in the entire world, would be considered vandalism.
